Donore athletes perfom with great distinction at the National Championships in Santry.
John Travers in his last race before he represents Ireland in the World Junior Championships in Canada was a dominant winner in the Junior 3000m, where he ran solo for the second half of the race to run an excellent time of 8 minutes 12 secs, shattering the championship record. John flies out to Moncton in Canada on Tuesday as part of nine member Irish team and we wish him and the team the very best of luck.
Eamonn Fahey jumped out to a fabulous p.b. of 7m 23cm in the long jump and took a silver National Senior medal after becoming Junior Champion only 2 weeks ago.
John Menton medalled again in teh discus taking silver for the second year in a row. John had a run of national titles up to 3 years ago.
Other athletes in action were Stephen Murphy in the 3000m Steeplechase. Stephen was selected for Ireland in the Europa cup earlier in the summer but was unsure of his form coming into this race after a few weeks of not being fully well. He gave it a real go in the race taking the pace on from 3 laps gone but the disrupted training took its toll and he faded to 7th in a very competitive Steeple chase.
Cindy Hickey ran a p.b. in the Ladies 1500m final. Again in a very tough race Cindy held on to the pack for as long as she could and deservedly ran under the important 5minute barrier. Mark Dooley ran a very solid 15min 30s 5000m and showed how much he has improved since running the same race last year.
On saturday Chris Kelly and Eoin Durkan were drawn in the same heat of the 800m. Chris managed to turn the tables on Eoin on this occassion to avenge the Lenister seniors, and clocked a very impressive 1min 59secs with Eoin just behind, in what was really heavy rain and tough conditions.
Overall an impressive Donore showing on the biggest stage for Irish Track and Field athletics.
