Sad Passing of Ed Healey - May He Rest In Peace
Sad Passing of Ed Healey - May He Rest In Peace

After a three year very difficult and brave battle with cancer, Ed died in the Blackrock Hospice in Dublin and was buried in Shanganagh Cemetry Bray on Monday 10 August, following mass in Dalkey. Ed was only in his 50s. Our condolences go to his partner Aine and their two beautiful girls Meadbh and Eilis.

Ed an Irish American from the Boston region was an exceptional thrower who excelled in the hammer. He joined Donore in the 90s on arrival in Ireland and made an immediate impact not just because of his athletic talent but also because of his vibrant, warm personality. Ed was a larger than life character, very proud of his Irish ancestory. He finished third in the National senior hammer but won many National championships on Donore field relay teams at the National Relays. He had a very successful throwing career in the Vets/Masters ranks where he won numerous National titles and green singlets. His proudest moment was when he was selected to represent Ireland at senior level. No one who has ever met Ed are likely to forget him because his enthusiasm and "joie de vivre". Ed was sometimes in trouble with athletic authorities as he fearlessly defended the cause of throwers. He was a great Donore man, very proud of the great tradition of throwers in the club. It is no wonder that so many of the top Irish throwers over the last 20 years paid their respects at his funeral - one travelled over from the USA. It was also great to see so many of our club members say their farewell to a fantastic human being and great athlete. We will never see his likes again. May he rest in peace.
