It was a busy midweek of track athletics in Dublin with the graded league continuing with it's 3rd outing in Irishtown on Wednesday night and the BHAA track races in Trinity College, Dublin on last night.
First Donore athlete in action on Wednesday was Karen O'Neill making a welcomed return to the track. Karen ran the first of women's 400 metres winning in a time of 65.89. Although there was only 2 in the race and Karen was not entirely happy with her performance it gave her the chance to dip her toe back into the track scene and no doubt there will be good performances ahead of her again.
In the women's mile it was great to see 3 Donore athlete's lining up and performing well on the track. The race was pushed on and won by Emma Cooper of Clonliffe Harriers with our own Ali Loughney in pursuit. Ali ran a great race finishing in 5.37.48 but was unfortunately just pipped to the line to just miss out on a deserved 2nd place. A strong finish by Cliodhna Carthy brought her up to 6th place in 5.45.84 with Mary McDermott running solidly in a time of 5.56.67. Next up were George Brady and Colin Moore in the men's mile grade C. Both running PB's with George finishing 6th in 4.54.85 and Colin 9th in 4.57.18. Well done to all.
Thursday night on a sunny evening in Trinity was the spot were Business House athletes gathered in front of the Pav where students had gathered earlier in the day when lectures finished at 10am. A few Donore runners were out on the track competing over 3 distances of 800m, 1 mile and 3,000m in various grades. Andrew Downes was first up and acquitted himself well in his first track race running 2.32 in the 800m and finishing 6th in grade 12-17. Andrew led for the first 600m (He told me to mention that). Fred Kiernan was next up in the 800m grade 9-12 . Leading with a charge and a 61secs opening 400m, Fred was reeled in over the final 200m but managed a late spurt to secure 3rd in 2.17. Gavin Keogh ran a solid 2nd place all the way in the men's mile grade 9-12 finishing in 5.17. Colin Moore and Donal Iremonger lined up against each other in the mile grade 1-8. Colin sitting in 3rd for most of the race was carefully tracked by Donal who made his move with 200 to go to take 4th spot, just outside sub 5mins, with Colin finishing 5th in 5.04. Fred was again up in the men's 3000m and ran a good 10.55. An enjoyable evening of athletics had once again.
Best of luck goes out to Adrienne Jordan who competes in the UK this weekend in the British Milers Club meet on Saturday. Also good luck to some of our juniors/juveniles who will compete tomorrow in Santry at the Leinster Schools Championship.
