Excellent Haul of Medals in Dublin Championships
Excellent Haul of Medals in Dublin Championships

The Dublin Juvenile Track and Field Championships held in Santry Stadium gave our young athletes a chance to test themselves against the best in Dublin and secure entry into the National championships in the Antrim Forum. This they did with great success. In total our athletes brought home 18 medals, with Laura Flaherty, Ciara Grange, John Travers and Eamonn Fahey winning gold. We won three medals in the hurdles, which reflects the progress being made in that discipline and the expertise of our club coaches. Megan Delaney won her first Dublin medal when securing silver in the U13 Javelin. Apart from our medal winners, our other athletes performed very well, narrowly missing out on medals in several cases. We had several new members who are just beginning in athletics competing-they performed very well and no doubt will be winning Dublin medals in the future. We had 30 athletes competing who managed to notch up over 45 PBs. We want to compliment them not only on their performances but on how well they conducted themselves over the three days. Not once did club officials have to correct any athlete and didn’t they look fantastic in their black and white track suits. Thank you to all who volunteered to officiate and to our coaches and club officials who helped organise our athletes. Finally a big thank you to the parents who brought out the athletes, without whose help we couldn’t have been so successful.

Meanwhile on Monday 26th a small group of Donore runners gathered on Birdcage walk, beside St. James's Park in central London for the start of the inaugural Bupa 10,000. The race is staged over the last 10K of the London marathon and is likely to be part of the 2012 Olympic marathon course. The weather was not kind with heavy rain and wind but it didn't deter the group.  It was great to run such a fantastic course taking in the sites of beautiful central London and finishing on The Mall. First Donore man to cross the line was Gavin Keogh in 35.25 finishing in 31st position with Colin Moore next  in 41st (37.07). Padraig McGreal finished in 42.10, Louisa Nesbitt  43.25 and Jo Walsh 47.00. The race was won by Micah Kogo in 28.08 with Zerseany Tadese 2nd (28.15), followed by Mo Farah (28.39). The Ladies race was won by Germany's Irina Mikitenko (32:02).

In the Newry City Marathon on May 26th Karen McLoughlin ran 3hrs 50 and was the 1st woman in the W50 category. Congratulations to Karen. It was also an inaugural event so another one to add to your running calendar.

On Wednesday night the 4th graded meet of the summer was held in Santry with some great performances too. A late change in the race card saw a number of development 800m races added instead of the billed 1500m.  Darren Kelly ran a fine race in the dev2 category 800m finishing 5th in 2.01.10.  A number of our ladies were also in action over 800 with Adrienne Jordan trying her hand at the distance in the A race.  Winner Kelly Reid led from the start pushing the pace which proved a little too quick for Adrienne who finished 7th in 2.23.65. In the B race Ali Loughney ran a fantastic race only to be beaten by a fraction of a second putting her into 2nd place in 2.29.08 with Cliodhna Carty 8th in 2.41.32 and Norma Harnedy, trying the track for the first time, finishing 9th in 2.41.67. Well done to them all. The experience of track running is also obviously paying off.  In the men's 1500m Philip Cavanagh notched up a PB with a late charge over the last 400m taking 5th in 4.06.19 with Mark Dooley one place behind with 4.09.62. Results can also be downloaded from our results section and some photos should posted soon.
