It was a scorching Bank Holiday Monday as 15 of our ladies set out to run the 26th Flora Women’s Mini Marathon supported, as always, by Jim McNamara and a faithful team of Donore stewards. With a customary fast start, the initial pace was set by Lucy D’Arcy (Sportsworld) with Fiona Mahon and Anne Curley in close contact but by 6k Annette Kealy (Raheny) had taken up position at the front and was stretching out the leading group to come home in 1st place in a time of 35.45. Second was Pauline Curley (Offaly) and Siobhan O’Docherty (Tipperary) was 3rd.
There were some great performances from Donore athletes with 2 of our ladies in medal positions: Fiona Mahon, 9th, 38.08 and Anne Curley, 14th (2nd over 35), 38.37. The remainder of the positions and times were as follows:
Florence Curley (25th) 40.09, Samantha Conroy (40th) 41.29, Louisa Nesbitt (46th) 42.11, Mary McDermott (65th) 43.28, Julia Hackett (85th) 44.45, Joanna Walsh (92th) 45.00, Sheelagh Sullivan (120th) 46.20, Jill Dempsey (182nd) 48.40 Mary-Louise McLaughlin (269th) 50.19, Livia Ruiz Soriano (380th) 52.12, Joan McTernan (382nd) 52.13, Orla Nolan (471st) 53:17, Ann Woodlock (673rd) 55.00.
Support along the route was fantastic as spectators came out to enjoy the fine weather and cheer on the 40,000 women who took part. Probably the best supporter was Jim Mac, who was there in the last couple of kilometres to make sure the Donore girls didn’t let the pace slack. Donore’s very own Paul Hevey was among a group of physios who came out to give the ladies a well-deserved sports massage after the race. The post-mini marathon dinner organised by Florrie rounded off a fantastic day, well done to everyone who took part and thank you to all who helped out.
Jo Walsh.
