In stark contrast to last year the Track and Field National Championships took place in glorious sunshine in Morton Stadium over the weekend. Although a strong breeze did prevail for the two days and played it's part.
The sun was certainly shining for one Donore athlete, John Menton. John was successful in taking gold in two outings on Sunday. First up was the men's discus in which he threw 46.03 metres narrowly beating Pavel Hazler of Leevale into 2nd place. Later in the day John threw 7.90 in the men's 56lbs (distance) to win and retain his title of National Champion. Congratulations to John on his double.
Overall not many Donore athletes competed over the 2 days and George Brady was our sole competitor on the Saturday running in the men's 10,000 final. Pitting himself against the likes of Martin Fagan and Mark Keneally was always going to be a big ask and unfortunately the pace proved too much and George dropped out just after halfway.
On Sunday John Travers was first out on the track for Donore in the junior men's 3,000m. John sat in nicely with the pack but dropped behind and finished the race in 9.18.90. It was a disappointing run by his own standards after posting a recent PB of 8.43.26. The race was won by Michael Mulhare of North Laois in 8.43.90. Mark Dooley competed in the men's 5000m and found the pace from the start hard going. Mark too was disappointed with his finish of 16.20.10 but was up against a strong experienced field in his first National track race at senior level. Adrienne Jordan competed in the women's 5000m and she too was disappointed with her performance running way outside her best and finishing in 17.55.59. The long delay on the start line obviously didn't help many of the athletes. Adrienne's run comes of the back of a great performance in the 1,500m the week previously in the Cork City Sports meet where she equaled a PB of 4.36. Well done to all who competed.
