It is somewhat of a quiet time in Athletics at the moment with many athletes taking a break now that the track season is nearing an end and soon training will commence for the forthcoming cross country season. It seems strange to be talking about it now and you could be forgiven for thinking the XC season had already arrived with the persistent wet weather we are having.
On Wednesday 30th July the final Dublin graded track and field meeting took place in Morton Stadium and once again there was a strong Donore turn out.
First up on the track was Andrew Downes who decided to debut at the 200m, performing well and taking third in the grade D race in a time of 26 secs. Ali Loughney was the only female Donore representative on the evening running in the 800m. Ali ran a gutsy race but was just pipped on the line to finish third. Fred Kiernan followed in the grade D 800m and ran a strong race from the beginning to achieve a well deserved second place along with a personal best of 2.11.74 which he wasn't expecting!
The 3000M race grade C was billed as 'Tom's Last Hurrah' it featured Tom Hickey saying good bye to his 30's and running his last race before getting his V2 upgrade (TH 40.1). In a show of support Tom was joined on the track by no less than 4 other Donore runners making sure he made it over the line . Finishing times were as follows: Gavin Keogh 9.53, Donal Ironmonger 9.56, Colin Moore 10.02, man of the moment Tom Hickey 10.03 and George Brady 10.06.
Mark Dooley ran in the 3000m grade A race. Mark was disappointed not to get under the 9min barrier posting exactly 9.00. Well done to all young and old.
