Forty-three years after the last Donore win at National Junior level, the Donore Junior A team scored a resounding victory at the National Junior Clubs Cross Country Championshipsin Derry last November.

As a result, our six scoring athletes are competing in the European Clubs Cross Country as Team Ireland — the first Donore team to represent Ireland since the 1993 National Senior winning team. Back in the glory days of Donore, the Donore Seniors regularly represented Ireland in this competition.

Our team of Rhys Johnson, Callum Twomey, Liam Morris, Charlie O’Neill, Harry Moran, and Eoghan Mooney were the first Donore Junior team to win in 43 years. Notably, this team also won the U18 competition, an even more outstanding achievement. This race will prove an incredible experience in the development of these young athletes, considering their age.

Their performance in Derry as a team was even more remarkable for how tightly they packed, with the 7th and 8th scorers on our A team, Cian Harold and Charlie White, finishing just behind Eoghan on the day. The Donore B team finished 6th overall in the same race, beating many fancied teams on the day as well.

The championship team will consist of four athletes — Rhys, Callum, Liam, and Charlie — as our top four scorers from Nationals, with three athletes to score. Harry and Eoghan are named as substitutes in case of withdrawal and may run in the open race if they do not compete.

Coach Joe Kelly, as team manager, and William Morris will be there to represent and support the team.
